A remarkable character

I have very fond memories of Roger as a fixture at the Tilmanstone family gatherings that I too have frequented over the past 20 years. A man who to the untrained eye appeared quite shambolic, but his ruffled exterior hid a very interesting mind. I remember once helping to install a broadband router into the utility room. Roger had his own box of cables and tools, despite the fact that he didn’t even live there.

Some of Roger’s quips have become part of the vernacular amongst our group of friends. I’m reminded of an occasion many years ago when, in the middle of a discussion about something quite banal, Roger interjected with “did you hear the play?” - a reference to the Afternoon Play on BBC Radio 4 but really quite irrelevant to the subject matter.

Most memorable of all though is the occasion of Ginny and Tim’s wedding. I and a number of others were providing entertainment that night, along with Jo, as part of the jazz band. For that reason, we were smartly but uniformly dressed.

During a break, Roger approached Ashley - piano player, close friend of Jo’s and himself ostensibly well-known to Roger for many years - and in an agitated state asked “are you house, or bar?” before going on to tell him that the toilet paper had run out in the gents’ lavatories.

I will cherish these memories of a kind, somewhat desultory but overwhelmingly kind man. All my love to the rest of the family.
