How I met Roger.

Created by Esther 3 years ago

My first meeting with Roger was between 1965 -1968. I was a Sea Ranger in Bournemouth whilst working as a student nurse at Poole General Hospital. Brownsea Island - now known as the Scout Outdoor Centre and area of the First Scout Campsite held by Lord Baden Powell for 12 young Boys in 1907, it was here I first meet Roger. Roger like all members was passionate about Scouting and this opportunity to be part of bringing Brownsea Island back to life again for the future of young people.

The Island had become over grown until 1962 when the National Trust gave this section of the Island to the Scout and Guide Association to clear the whole area and bring back to life again. As a Sea Ranger I joined with many other members of units from Portsmouth and Southampton to spend weekends clearing the over growth on this part of the island. Roger was one of those members having been a Scout and then a Deep Sea Scout and working for the NAAFI. Career and Marriage steered my life into different directions for a few years and I lost touch with Roger and many Scout and Guide friends until 1980's. I then met up again with Janet Cook again - she was a Bournemouth sea ranger with me and she has remained in contact with Roger all his life.

Janet and I more recently met up with Roger on March 3rd in Romsey enjoying visiting Romsey Cathedral and St John's House and a light lunch on a very wet day. Roger was keen for us to meet up again which we promised we would, but Corvid-19 and lockdown unfortunately prevented the opportunity once again.

Roger amazed me with his wide depth of knowledge and interest in so many subjects of life. He will be soley missed by all who knew him.
